Topic Descriptions

1. HR Stands Alone: Challenges and Advantages

Being in HR can be lonely. You can’t really be friends with anyone inside the organization. You can be friendly, but not friends. If HR is not a distinct island, its role is undermined. Perception matters as much as reality. How does this impact your role and your well-being?

2. When You Have to Be the Bad Guy

No matter how much time and energy you put into building strong relationships and trust with staff, it is challenging to feel like the bad guy when things don’t work and you (like terminating a beloved staff member). How do you stand firm (and still be supportive) while being the perceived bad guy?

3. Accountability ≠ Punitive.

When an organization is trying to build accountability in the organization and it is assumed that your actions are punitive. How does HR build accountability without burning bridges? Whose role is it to have the difficult conversations?

4. Moving HR from Function to Leadership

There are specific functions for which HR is responsible, including compensation, benefits, job descriptions, hiring, policies, procedures and practices, etc. Beyond that there is a powerful role for HR to play as part of the Leadership team guiding policies, practices and culture. How does one get inside the room where it happens?

About your HR Circle facilitators:

Rita Sever

Growing up the youngest of six kids in a low-income family, Rita often had the experience of feeling unseen and unheard. She became very focused on hearing and seeing others – as individuals and within the groups that we live and work in. This led her to recognize the uneven playing field that we call “equal.”

Rita works with nonprofits throughout the country to improve the culture and practice of supervision, thereby helping the organization to be more effective. Previously, she served as an HR Director, and HR consultant and a trainer. She has worked with social justice organizations throughout the country. Rita has an MA in Organizational Psychology and is a certified professional coach. Rita has taught “HR in a Nonprofit” to graduate students at University of San Francisco and Sonoma State University in California. Rita has also written two books: Supervision Matters and Leading for Justice.
